Prayer of Thomas Merton

My Lord God,
I have no idea where I am going.

I do not see the road ahead of me
Nor do I really know myself,
And the fact that I think I am following your will
Does not mean that I am actually doing so.

But I believe that the desire to please you
Does in fact please you.
And I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that if I do this,
You will lead me by the right road
Though I may know nothing about it.

Therefore will I trust you always though,
I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. * I will not fear, for you are ever with me,
And you will never leave me to face my struggles alone.

Stations of the Cross for Vocations

This year for our program we centered the stations on vocations and invited Sr. Dennise and Sr. Ruth to join us. Since Bishop Foys announced this; The Year of Women Religious, I felt that it was appropriate to invite the Sisters to join us. Our PSR family over the past few months have been participating and continues to participate in the Traveling Cross for Vocations.

Today we walked through each station reflecting on Jesus and how we can reflect on our own vocation in life and pray for others to answer the call.

Below is the reflection for the 1st Station:

Jesus,

you were publicly condemned to death.

Jesus, we ask that you call young men and women today to publicly accept your invitation to follow you in spite of what others may think or say. Give to them a passion for reaching out through your love to the needs of your brothers and sisters.

After our service we allowed the children to ask questions. Both Sr. Ruth and Sr. Dennise shared their call to vocation. One of the children asked how long will you be a sister, and Sr. Ruth replied that she will be one until she dies. We are so blessed to have the Sisters in our lives. They will continue to pray for us and ask the same in return.

My hope is that this service is for you and your family, a time of reflection and prayer. May it enrich each of you with a deeper sense of love and understanding for our vocation in life. We are invited to pray as a family for all of our young people that they may be open to hear and have the courage to answer God’s call in their lives. We also pray for those who have already settled into their state of life, that they may have the strength to persevere and be open to God’s continued guidance in their lives.

Response to Tornado Relief

St. Joseph Parish is responding to the hardships of our brothers and sisters in southern Campbell and northern Pendleton Counties whose homes have been lost or damaged by the recent tornado and storms in the following ways:

Bishop Foys has directed that a second collection be taken at Masses on Saturday and Sunday, March 3 – 4 to provide immediate relief to those affected here in Northern Kentucky. Checks should be made payable to St. Joseph Parish with “storm relief” in memo. These funds will be distributed by pastors and parish life collaborators of the effected parishes as they respond to emergency needs such as food, shelter and medical care.

Supplies can be dropped off at the garage next to the convent from 4 – 7 PM on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, March 6th, 7th & 8th. Supplies can also be brought to school by students. All supplies collected will be sent to Sts Peter and Paul Parish for distribution to those in need.

Supplies needed are:

  • Non-perishable food items

  • Cleaning supplies

  • Bleach

  • Personal care items: tooth brushes, tooth paste, soap, deodorant

  • Work gloves

  • Paper towels

  • Toilet paper

  • Bottled water

  • Boxes

  • Storage containers

  • Laundry detergent

Practicing Penance

When I sprain my ankle, part of the healing process will involve physical therapy. It's tender, and perhaps it is swollen. It may be important to put ice on it first, to reduce the inflammation. I may want to wrap it an elevate it and stay off of it. Then I will need to start moving it and then walking on it, and eventually, as the injury is healed, I'll want to start exercising it, so that it will be stronger than it was before, so that I won't as easily injure it again.

Penance is a remedy, a medicine, a spiritual therapy for the healing I desire. The Lord always forgives us. We are forgiven without condition. But complete healing takes time. With serious sin or with bad habits we've invested years in forming, we need to develop a therapeutic care plan to let the healing happen. To say "I'm sorry" or to simply make a "resolution" to change a long established pattern, will have the same bad result as wishing a sprained ankle would heal, while still walking on it.

Lent is a wonderful time to name what sinful, unhealthy, self-centered patterns need changing and to act against them by coming up with a strategy. For example, if the Lord is shining a light into the darkness of a bad pattern in my life, I can choose to "stop doing it." But, I have to work on a "change of heart" and to look concretely at what circumstances, attitudes, and other behaviors contribute to the pattern. If I'm self-indulgent with food, sex, attention-seeking behaviors and don't ask "what's missing for me, that I need to fill it with this?" then simply choosing to stop the pattern won't last long. Lasting healing needs the practice of penance.

Chrism Mass/Holy Thursday - 7th grader needed‏

An email was sent on 2-20-12:

We are still in need of a 7th Grader from PSR. If your family would be interested please let me know. I would need to let Vicki Klocke know before March 7th.

The Chrism Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 3 at 7PM at the Cathedral. Students are advised to arrive NO LATER THAN 6:30. The Mass lasts close to 2 hours. Vicki will be present to coordinate our representatives.

Mass of the Lord's Supper is on Holy Thursday, April 5 at 7:30 PM. Students need to arrive NO LATER THAN 7:15 to meet with Vicki prior to Mass for instructions on the presentation of the oils. This year we have 2 children in our RCIC process. We would like to involved them in this as well. Therefore, we will be asking those two, along with the school and PSR 7th graders to attend both the Chrism Mass and Mass of the Lord's Supper. Two of them will be in the procession to receive the oils and two of them will present the oils on Holy Thursday.

April 5th is also the same day as the Seder Meal so don't worry about dinner because you can RSVP when the parish makes the bulletin announcement.

Thank you for all that you do to be part of our parish community and for raising your child in the Catholic faith.

Family needed for SEDER MEAL 4-5-12‏

An email was sent back on 2-20-12!

We are still in need of a PSR 2nd grade family for the seder meal. We alternate between the school and PSR; this year it is PSR's turn. The seder meal and the Mass take place on Holy Thursday, April 5. The seder is at 6:00 and the Mass begins at 7:30. There is a short ceremony which is the actual seder meal that you will participate in and then afterwards there is a dinner before mass.

The seder meal family should be the family of a 2nd grader who is preparing for first communion. We need a family with at least two children who are able to read / participate in the seder ceremony (in other words, the 2nd grader should have at least one older sibling who can read a part from the script).

I need to provide Vickie Klocke with the names of the 2nd grade students, the parents’ names and a phone number that she may use to contact you about any details when we get closer to Holy Week.

Please let me know if you are interested so I can pass this on. Thank you for all that you to be part of our Parish Community and for raising your children in the Catholic faith.

O Holy Spirit,
Spirit of wisdom and divine love,
impart Your knowledge, understanding,
and counsel to youth that they may know the vocation
wherein they can best serve God.
Give them courage and strength
to follow God's holy will.
Guide their uncertain steps, strengthen their resolutions,
shield their chastity, fashion their minds,
conquer their hearts, and lead them to the vineyards
where they will labor in God's holy service.

What Needs Changing in My Life?

We start to come to know that by asking for help. "Lord, help me to know what needs changing." It is often said, "Be careful about what you ask for." This is one of those requests that God must surely want to answer.

Then, we have to listen. With a little bit of reflection, most of us will just begin to "name" things that make up our ordinary habits and ways of being who we are, that we aren't very proud of. Things we do and things we never get around to doing. We can "feel" the call to change our attitudes, our self-absorbtion, or our way of interacting with others. Perhaps a spouse, a loved one, a friend, a family member, a co-worker has told me something about myself that gets in the way of communication, that makes relating to them difficult. Maybe I don't take God very seriously. I go to Church on Sunday, and contribute my share, but I don't really take time to deal with my relationship with God. Perhaps I've let my mind and fantasy get cluttered with escapist litter. I might begin to name a number of self-indulgent habits. I may realize I rarely, if ever, hear the cry of the poor, and can't remember when I've answered that cry. It could be that dishonesty on all kinds of levels has become a way of life. One of the roadblocks in my relationship with God and others may be deep wounds or resentments from the past, things I continue to hold against others or myself.
