Grade 3 Blest Are We Faith & Word Edition Parish helps students learn, love and live their faith. Engaging Special Features help build Catholic identity.   Student Books include five units, each with four chapters.

Chapters are structured around the four pillars of the Catechism: Catholic faith, worship, life, and prayer. Each begins with a Take-Home page to involve parents in helping their children prepare for the chapter. Lessons follow a three-step learning process inviting the children to Share, to Hear and Believe, and to Respond. Each chapter includes Scripture and church teaching including statements of faith and Faith Words. Children respond through written work, activities and prayer. Chapters conclude with review exercises. Faith in Action pages highlight parish ministries and vocations. A write-in glossary and a mini-catechism are included at the back of each book.

Today was a special day for our Third Grader's.  They received their scapulars. Fr. Mathias along with some special guest that did not receive their scapular in the Third Grade attended this ceremony.

Procedure for the Blessing and Investiture of the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

To be eligible for THE SCAPULAR PROMISE, one must be enrolled in the Family of Carmel. This is a simple ceremony, which takes only a moment and can be done by any Carmelite or duly authorized priest. The words used by the priest when enrolling a person in the Confraternity of the Scapular are as follows:

Priest - Lord Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, sanctify by Thy power these scapulars, which for love of Thee and for love of Our lady of Mount Carmel, Thy servants will wear devoutly, so that through the intercession of the same Virgin Mary, Mother of God, and protected against the evil spirit, they persevere until death in Thy grace. Thou who lives and reigns world without end.  Amen.

THE PRIEST SPRINKLES HOLY WATER AND INVESTS PERSON(S) WHILE SAYING:

Receive this blessed Scapular and beseech the Blessed Virgin that through Her merits, you may  wear it without stain. May it defend you against all adversity and accompany you to eternal life. Amen.

AFTER THE INVESTITURE THE PRIEST CONTINUES WITH THE PRAYERS:

I, by the power vested in me, admit you to participate in all the spiritual benefits obtained through the mercy of Jesus Christ by the Religious Order of Mount Carmel.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

May God Almighty, the Creator of Heaven and earth, bless you, He who has deigned to join you to the confraternity of the Blessed Virgin Of Mount Carmel; we beseech Her to crush the head of the ancient serpent so that you my enter into possession of your eternal heritage, through Christ our Lord.

Respondent - Amen.

Do you still have your scapular?  If so I encourage you to show it to your child.  If you haven't worn it in a while, now is the time to share this moment with your child.  Sacramentals are so important to our faith and they are constant reminders of why our Lord and savior died for each and everyone of us so that we may have eternal life.  Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us!

Since this year is the "Year of Religious",
I have asked each grade to write a prayer for vocations.
The Third grader's prayed theirs today, well I should say a portion did.
With the time change we had a lot of absences today.
Here is their prayer for Vocations:
God, Our Father, help those people who are called to become
priests, sisters and deacons.  Watch over them and protect
them on their journey for your love.  Help us to hear your
calling and help us to do good deeds. AMEN.

Substitute!  Today our third grader's had a substitute teacher, Susan!  We are so blessed to have catechists that can fill in for our teachers when they are unable to teach on any given Sunday.  In the third grade they learn about the rosary.  As they learn they also have the chance to make their very own rosary.

Why do Catholics Pray the Rosary?

The Rosary is a devotion honoring Mary. It is a prayer that has been prayed since the Middle Ages to draw one closer to Mary, and through her, to her son, Jesus. By praying the Rosary, we repeat the Hail Mary over and over to show love and respect for Mary, Mother of God and our mother. As we pray, we reflect upon the joyful, sorrowful, and glorious events in the lives of Mary and Jesus. The Church’s devotion to the Blessed Virgin is intrinsic to Christian worship. The Church rightly honors the Blessed Virgin with special devotion.
Find out more about the Rosary.
Read pages 252-253 in your child's religion text book or
see paragraphs 963-975 in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Forty Hour Devotion
Sunday, November 13th
________________________________________________________

All PSR families are most welcome and encouraged to attend! As 3rd and 8th grade parents, your children will have a special role in the Solemn Closing of these devotions: Sunday, November 13. As 3rd grader's, and those who made their First Holy Communion last year, your children are invited and expected to have an honored place in the procession at the Closing, which will be going outdoors: a public witness to our faith in the Lord's Eucharistic presence (weather permitting!) They are encouraged to wear their First Communion attire from last year if that is possible. As 8th graders, and those preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, your children are likewise invited and expected to have an honored place in the procession. We ask 3rd and 8th graders to meet in Kelley Hall at 3:30 PM.

Please RSVP by emailing stjoepsr@hotmail.com so we may have a head count.  Thank you!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

October 23, 2011
"Catholics want Christ's mercy to reach through his Church to the farthest corners of the world. The Church still responds as Isaiah did in another time; 'Then heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? Who  will go for us?" 'Here I am,' I said, 'send me!'" (Is. 6:8)

These words of the U.S. Catholic Bishops in Teaching the Spirit of Mission As Gentes: Continuing Pentecost Today remind us that God continues to call us to proclaim the Good News and build the kingdom on earth.

In response to God's call and the Bishops' challenge, we have introduced a new Mission Education Program, Journey With Jesus, into our religious education classes.  Through this program we hope to:
  • Give children a deeper understanding of their baptismal call to mission
  • Develop global awareness and a sense of the interconnectedness of all creation
  • Encourage them to reflect and become active participants in creating God's kingdom on earth.
We invite you to walk with your child and together find new ways to spread God's message of peace and justice for all.

Theme

Respect for All God's People

Objectives
  • To understand the meaning of human dignity and respect and that all people have dignity because they are created in God's image
  • To learn how missionaries work with others to recognize and protect people's rights
It is a privilege to share with you the Christian education of your child.

Sincerely,
Amy Racke
3rd Grade Catechist for PSR

    HISTORY / PROMISE

“Take this Scapular, it shall be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger and a pledge of peace. Whosoever dies wearing this Scapular shall not suffer eternal fire.”  This is Mary’s promise made July 16, 1251 to Saint Simon Stock.

One of the great mysteries of our time is that the majority of Catholics either ignores, or has entirely forgotten this Heavenly promise of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Our Lady further says: “Wear the Scapular devoutly and perseveringly. It is my garment. To be clothed in it means you are continually thinking of me, and I in turn, am always thinking of you and helping you to secure eternal life.”

Today your third grader took part in the Scapular Enrollment with Fr. Lange  Talk to your child about the scapular now may be a good time to take part in a family home evening activity and show them your scapular that you received.
